I believe that you can only use ClearType if you have Windows XP installed.

What does it do?......... It changes this:

to this!

This is how to do it:

Click on this link. (You won't lose this page, a new window will open)

http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/cleartypeactivate.htm

Scroll down that page and put a tick in the box shown here:

and then click on the Step 2: Tune ClearType Settings

On the next page, choose (by clicking on it) one of the available text samples. I prefer the top left-hand one, but the choice is yours.

The outer edge of your chosen text will become highlighted, and now simply scroll down and click 'Apply' on the right-hand side of the page.

That has installed ClearType on your PC.

Now you have to put it to work.

In your Control Panel, click on Display, then choose 'Appearance' and finally choose 'Effects'.

Set your options to look like these:

Click the appropriate Apply and OK and then open your Windows Explorer to see the difference.

Notice I don't use the Fade Effect, Large Icons or Shadows under Menus. They simply use system resources and you will notice an improvement in performance if you get rid of them. People will say that using ClearType will reduce system performance, but to me the result is well worth the 'cost'.
